Nakla’s youth Ujjal scripts success story with mushroom farming

Nakla (Sherpur) Correspondent: Mohammad Ujjal Mia, a small business man in Nakla upazila of Sherpur district, has become self- sufficient through commercial cultivation of mushroom. Now he has big benefited from mushroom cultivation.
Ujjal Mia, son of Hossain Ali at Narayankhola area under Charashtdhar union of the upazila, Mushroom
cultivation has become popular in the area and the surrounding districts. He started Mushroom farming in an
abandoned house in 2016 as hobby. Having started growing the relatively untraditional vegetable mushroom without
any training, he suffered losses in the first few years.
However, after receiving a short-term training from the mushroom training center in Savar Mushroom
Development Center in 2021, he has now seen the benefits of using the knowledge gained from the training to
cultivation mushrooms.
Ujjal has already become known as a successful mushroom cultivator in the district beyond the upazila. He
is now cultivating it commercially. Due to success in the Mushroom cultivation, many people in the area are now
getting enthusiastic in mushroom farming. He made a revolution on rooftop farming. He is now a successful youth
entrepreneur.
Ujjal Mia said that during the Corona epidemic, the business had to spend less time. It would not be useful.
Sometimes he had to pay the rent of the shop from his own capital. So looking for an alternative source of income,
he turned to commercial mushroom cultivation.
He increased the scope of mushroom cultivation. He started his mushroom farming journey with a packet
of 30 spawns. Currently, his collection consists of 150 large cylinders of straw, weighing 2 kg to 3 kg, and 500 small
cylinders of wood powder and pulp weighing 1 to 1.5 kg. Now he is earning Tk 8,000 to Tk 10,000 per month
excluding all expenses. Ujjal Mia is dreaming processing him mushrooms and exporting it out of the country. The
market price per kg mushroom is Tk 250 to Tk 350. He does not need to be taken Mashroom to the market for sale.
Buyers come to him home.
In response to a question about being interested in mushroom cultivation, Ujjal Mia said, when I was on the
verge of disorientation during Corona epidemic, an elder brother agriculturist Shafiul Alam Suim, village of
Charbasti, encouraged me to take an interest in mushroom cultivation. With his encouragement, I am making spawn
packets myself by bringing spawn or mushroom seeds from Savar Mushroom Development Center. He said
different types of mushrooms are cultivated around the world. But oyster, milky, paddy straw mushrooms are
suitable for growing at home in the climate of our country and relatively easy methods. Winter is also suitable for
growing oyster mushrooms. The best time for the other two is from March onwards, when the cold subsides. He also
said that the oyster mushroom cultivation is very easy at home; so many educated boys and girls are taking advice
from him. Some bought a few packets and started mushroom cultivation. Many of them are seeing success. There
are mainly three materials needed to cultivation of mushroom. These materials are- spawn or mushroom seeds, straw
and polythene bags, ujjal added.
Nakla UH&FPO Dr Mohammad Golam Mostafa said that the mushrooms are a nutritious food. It is rich in
protein, minerals and vitamins. It is also tasty and easy to digest. Being rich in calcium along with protein, it is very
useful in the formation of bones and teeth. Due to the presence of folic acid, it is useful in anemia. So doctors are
recommending cultivating and eating this high protein mushroom.
Upazila Agriculture Officer (UAO) agriculturist Abdul Wadud said that mushroom is delicious to eat. The
mushroom is known as “Meat of the poor”. It is a vegetable crop in high demand, which is cultivated by many
people today. It has been appreciated by people as it is rich in various nutrients and tastes good. The demand of
mushroom is increasing day by day in the present market. So its commercial cultivation has started. They are
encouraging farmers, unemployed youths and housewives to mushroom farming. Many unemployed youths are
already becoming financially self-sufficient by mushroom cultivation, UAO agriculturist Abdul Wadud added.
